Reseller Resources Explained

BACK TO HOMEPAGE

Most of our customers fail to understand exactly what they are getting with a HostDime Reseller Account. This article explains the two different types of resources bundled with each account.

Sub-Reseller Resources

The amount of disk space and bandwidth which is provisioned to your HostDime reseller account for use with the sites you are hosting is known as the sub-reseller resources. It is these resources which are guaranteed with the hosting plan you signed up for.

To begin using these resources you must log into the Web Host Manager (WHM) interface for your reseller account, create Packages with various amounts of disk space and bandwidth, and then create new cPanel accounts using these packages.

Master Reseller Domain

The amount of disk space and bandwidth provisioned to main cPanel account hosting the domain you signed up with is known as the Master Reseller Domain resources.

As a bonus to reseller customers, HostDime hosts the primary domain on your account so that it doesn't take up any of the disk space and bandwidth you have available to resell to your clients (or to host your own websites). Resellers may use this bonus amount of disk space for their own personal uses, however Add-on domains are not allowed on the master reseller account due to this bonus.

On any reseller account offered by HostDime, the amount of bandwidth for the master reseller domain is always 10 Gigabytes, regardless of your reseller plan. The disk space usually matches that of your sub-reseller disk space resource amount, however it may vary depending on your plan.

When Customers Exceed Master Domain Resources

The master reseller domain is intended for use with a website the customer intends on using to sell hosting accounts and other services from. Hosting websites are not very high in traffic, and thus should not go above 10 Gigabytes of bandwidth. Unfortunately some resellers decide to host one of their clients on this main domain. This is not recommended and causes many problems.

The cPanel system, which makes the reseller accounts possible on our servers, does not allow for the master reseller domain to be easily switched with a sub-reseller account due to the sub-accounts dependencies on the username of the master reseller domain. If it were possible to switch the master reseller account with a sub-reseller account no conflict would occur as the customer could then assign more bandwidth to the account which previously was the master reseller domain after the switch.

Since this switch is not possible, and the master reseller domain resources are only a bonus offered by HostDime, HostDime cannot guarantee that the Master Reseller Domain resources will be available to all reseller accounts. When the master reseller domain goes above the resources allocated to it, the only option HostDime can make available to clients is to place the master reseller domain account under the ownership of the reseller (owning itself), thus causing the master domain to use the sub-reseller resources assigned to the reseller account.

Not all is lost when this is done however. Once the customer is able to bring the amount of disk space or bandwidth use down for the master reseller domain, the customer may request to have the master domain placed back under the ownership of HostDime so the bonus space and bandwidth is restored for the master reseller domain.
